The Maverick Bucks His Base
“I think every last one of them [reporters] would move to Massachusetts and marry John McCain if they could.”
—Joe Scarborough, MSNBC
Of course, that was way back in April of 2008, so let’s ignore that one. Maybe we should check in with Chris Matthews, suspected liberal bed-wetter and closet tree-hugger.
“The press loves McCain. We’re his base.”
—Chris Matthews, MSNBC
Oops. Maybe that was a different Chris Matthews. Clearly, the maverick is back at it again, going against the grain, carrying his own water, and not afraid to alienate himself from yet another base. The McCain camp has been crying foul for the last few days because the evil specter of the media has slithered out from under the rock placed on them by the Bush Administration for eight years to do something they’re not supposed to do: ask questions. All this question asking has even prompted Roger Simon of politico.com to issue an apology on behalf of the media.
The nerve of these guys. It’s not like they spent the better part of 20 months questioning Barack Obama’s patriotism, religion, friends, pastors, his wife’s patriotism, possible militant radicalism, or peeked any way into their background at all. They certainly didn’t treat Hillary Clinton unfairly, which is why the DNC was such a cake walk for everyone involved and no speeches had to be made in order to unify the party. Really, the media should just lay off the GOP. They haven’t done anything to deserve scrutiny. They’ve been a hallmark of good will, transparent, non-secretive, and as open with America as a 16 year old Alaskan’s legs in the back seat of a car. Shape up, media! Or else this country will start thinking we have some Constitutional right to a free press!
